Compress PDF files
Large PDFs are slow to email and often bounce off attachment limits, so DMI's compress tool re-encodes them into a smaller file using Ghostscript on our server. This is the one tool on the site that is not fully in-browser: your file is uploaded securely over HTTPS, compressed with your chosen quality preset, screen, ebook, or printer, and deleted immediately afterward. Nothing is kept once the compressed file is returned to you. Pick a lighter preset for email attachments or a higher-quality preset for printing, and the tool shows the before-and-after file size so you can see exactly how much space you saved.
How it works
- Upload the PDF you want to shrink.
- Choose a quality preset: screen, ebook, or printer.
- Click Compress and download the smaller PDF.
Frequently asked questions
Is PDF compression free?
Yes, compressing PDFs with DMI is free, with no signup and no daily limit beyond the standard rate limits we use to prevent abuse of the server. There is no watermark added and no charge for using any of the three quality presets.
Are my files private and safe?
Your file is uploaded securely over HTTPS to our server, compressed using Ghostscript, and deleted immediately afterward, it is never stored or shared. We log metadata, including your IP address, filename, and size, for up to 12 months to prevent abuse; the file content itself is never kept.
How much smaller will my PDF get?
It depends on the content and preset. PDFs full of high-resolution scans or images often shrink by 50 to 90 percent with the screen or ebook preset, while text-heavy documents compress less dramatically. The tool shows exact before-and-after sizes so you can compare presets.
